Drawing from a wide range of tropical riddims and urban electro, the power of Montreal-based DJ/producer Poirier’s bass blasts through any flimsy attempt to classify his music. Pinpointing the bits and pieces of dancehall beats, soca energy and electronic intensity is futile in the face of Poirier’s dance-driven creativity and air horn-worthy excitement. Signed to Ninja Tune, this is a man who just understands what works in the dance.
Poirier is constantly evolving. Landscapes of vibrant drums lead to pulsating, pitch-shifting, and infectious bass and synth patterns. He tears through new genres constantly, leaving a trail of packed, chaotic dancefloors in his wake. From his legendary Bounce Le Gros parties in Montreal, sell off events for two years running, to his new party, the bigger, better, bass-ier Karnival, Poirier has been unstoppable in his ability to mash styles, expand minds, and move asses.
Although based in Montreal, Poirier is also always moving—in just the past few years he has been invited to virtually every continent. Poirier on the bill equals a sure fire jam. No surprise that he’s shared the stage with Modeselektor, Diplo, Kode9, Amon Tobin and Toddla T, as well as taken SXSW, Fabric London, Australia’s Big Day Out, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and Mexico’s Cervantino Festival by storm.
Poirier’s signature skill of effortlessly linking disparate genres has led to worldwide collaborations with MCs and DJs from global hip hop, soca, grime, dancehall, booty bass, and much more. Electro sensations Crookers, dancehall veteran Burro Banton, the ever-eclectic dj/rupture, London’s tough gyal Warrior Queen, and Trinidadian soca master Mr Slaughter have all connected with Poirier, as well as longtime collaborators Face-T and MC Zulu.
Remixes are part of Poirier’s powerful repertoire, and he knows just how to pick apart a song and put it back together: bigger and heavier than before. Tracks by Gotan Project, Tommie Sunshine, Pole, Bassnectar and Yoav have all been given the Poirier treatment, garnering him attention from publications such as the Independent, the London Telegraph, Pitchfork, the New Yorker, the Wire and XLR8R.
Every Poirier release presents a new, yet equally slammin’, perspective. The critically acclaimed Breakupdown (2005) and No Ground Under (2008) were warm ups for 2009’s cavalcade of dancehall-soca-electro EPs, culminating in the latest collection of bangers, Running High.
Giving the massive what it wants, yet providing a musical education in what it needs, Poirier is a producer and DJ who has no boundaries except, perhaps, the rule that it’s gotta have bass, and it’s got to bounce. With this philosophy, Poirier will keep the dance rammed.
“Poirier, the man who seamlessly unites just about every genre into his mixes.” THE FADER
“If you haven’t checked out Poirier yet, or simply haven’t been moved by his past work, then Run the Riddim is a great place to join the ranks.” EXCLAIM
“If you’re looking for an album that’s incredibly enjoyable, then you should definitely check out Run The Riddim.” I HEART MUSIC
“Setting his sights on Soca this time, Poirier invigorates the style with an almost technofied drum palette and nitrous fuelled synthlines giving the already rampantly uptempo and wildout sound a focussed ravers edge that’ll bite any UK dancefloor in half.” BOOMKAT
“Yup, I said it - SOCA. But this ain’t your mama’s soca.” TURNTABLE LAB
“One of the best things about Poirier is that when he remixes a song he has little to no respect for anything about said song other than its empty spaces because he can fill them with exploding bass.” THE FADER
“Ghislain’s new soca ep is AMAZING. Uptempto dancefloor euphoria with his massive roughneck sound. it’s also really great to see Mr Slaughter on hear — these tunes will reach Trini and BK carnival for sure. Who’s afraid of 160bpm+? LARGE!” dj/rupture
“Run, jump, scream, South Rakkas Crew says whine pan di Soca Sound System. Ghislain your killin’ me!” South Rakkas Crew
“Poirier’s music is the sound of a new Montreal.” EXCLAIM
“Montreal’s indie guitar bands got plenty of coverage last year, but in 2008 they might be usurped by Ninja Tunessigned hip-hop producer Poirier. The French-Canuck connoisseur of grime, booty bass, ragga and “world riddum idioms” makes music that is accessible, innovative and above all danceable.” THE INDEPENDENT - UK
“M.I.A. might have the larger stage presence, but Ghislain Poirier has the better beats.” EXCLAIM
“[’Blazin’ is a] seriously jaw-dropping 12″ from the always-excellent Ghislain Poirier. There’s a definite dancehall flavour but this is dancehall circa 2020 with squelching synthesizers and a wonky rhythm that pokes at your sides until they start gyrating. (…) Easily the best 12″ on Ninja Tune for years this is one every DJ needs in their box, something to spice up the party and the front room equally this winter… Huge recommendation.” BOOMKAT
“Whoa. Ghislain Poirier’s grime-fueled bass riddims on No Ground Under have reached another level of sonic insanity. (..) This album strikes a fine balance of between abstract hip-hop and dub-fueled bass power.” XLR8R
“With jack-knifing collisions of Grime, hip-hop, dubstep, soca, good-time pop and anything else he fancies, DJ Ghislain Poirier has built his Bounce le Gros club night into a local institution. Irreverently and hedonistically crashing through genre boundaries, it’s one of the best parties around. Much like his turntable style, Poirier’s interpretive techniques are unfussy, straightforward and hugely entertaining, relying more on dancefloor-oriented intuition than tricksy manipulation.” THE WIRE
“This Montreal bass-beat fiend has seen his profile skyrocket as his sound has cemented itself over the past few years. He comes out swinging on his Ninja Tune debut. (…) This is a booty/crunk/electro-breakbeat album that is right in time with current sounds, while mimicking no one. Poirier is creating a genre all his own.” THE GAZETTE
“Ghislain’s booming bass and big, dirty beats are a major part of what’s put this country (Canada) on the map where this genre is concerned.” EYE WEEKLY
“He’s been called Montreal’s answer to Diplo, but as he proves here, DJ-producer Ghislain Poirier has his own thing going on.” THE GAZETTE
“In a remarkably short time, 30-year-old Poirier has become a black belt in beats and bass.” THE MIRROR
“His collaborations and remixes tend to be uniformly fierce and furious; he knows how to prop up whoever has the microphone.” CHICAGO READER
SURYA DUB videos
The Bug - Warrior Queen - Surya Dub - September 2008
The legendary Surya Dub party has become one the best monthlies in San Francisco, hailed the "Best Club Night" by SF Weekly and "Best Ambassadors of Dread Bass" by SF Bay Guardian. Surya Dub is the next level in Global Dubwize Vibes and Dread Bass Culture. On a mission to unite all dubwize communities from Roots Reggae to Dubstep and Ragga to Dread Bass, South Asian and Global Bass Beats and Drum'n'Bass to Bhangra and Glitch, Surya Dub is recognized as one of the most innovative and ground-breaking nights in the country.
The Surya Dub crew continue to pave the way for new styles and sounds and along the way get a newly created section in the BoB.. Super thanks to our fans and supporters round the world for this! Here's what the Guardian says...
"That cracked and funky dubstep sound surged through Clubland's speakers last year, an irresistible combination of breakbeats energy, dub wooziness, sly grime, intel glitch, and ragga relaxation. Many parties took the sound into uncharted waters, infusing it with hip-hop hooks, Bollywood extravaganza, roots rock swing, or "world music" folksiness. But only one included all those variations simultaneously, while pumping local and international live acts, fierce visuals, multimedia blowouts, and an ever-smiling crowd of rainbow-flavored fans: Surya Dub, a monthly lowdown hoedown at Club Six. The Surya crew, including perennial Bay favorites DJ Maneesh the Twister and Jimmy Love, and wondrous up-and-comers like Kush Arora, Kid Kameleon, DJ Amar, Ripley, and MC Daddy Frank on the mic, describes its ass-thumping sound as "dread bass," which moves beyond wordy genre description into a cosmic territory the rumble in your eardrums can surely attest to. Surya Dub keeps it in the community, too, helping to promote a growing network of citywide dubstep events and spreading their dread bass gospel with parties in India."
Maneesh the Twister (Surya Dub / Dub Mission / Dhamaal)
Maneesh the Twister is founder of Surya Dub, the Ambassadors of Dread Bass Culture. He was also co-founder of the Dhamaal Artist Collective. Maneesh was voted the Best Club DJ of San Francisco by the SF Bay Guardian! His productions appear on Dhamaal's debut Dhamaal Soundsystem CD which entered the I-tunes top 20 Electronic charts and also on Dhamaal's Transition EP under the moniker Echotwist with production partner Jethro. Also his track "Frankie's Next Move" appeared on XBOX 360 game "Project Gotham" and SONY BMG India's Shamur compilation! He also has tracks on Kush Arora’s “Dub Elements,” “FromBrooklyn to SF” and “Boiling Over” releases.
Maneesh has quite varied tastes and spins dub reggae, dubstep, breakbeat, drum’n’bass, dancehall, glitch hop, bhangra, and anything with BASS. Being heavily influenced by dub reggae, he is also a resident of the longest running weekly dub & roots night in the United States, Dub Mission, which is 12+ years and dubbing! He also held international residencies in Mumbai and Bangkok at Bed Supperclub in Thailand. In addition to his club jocking, Maneesh has been rinsing the airwaves from KNNC in Austin, TX to KUSF in SF. Maneesh toured India and the UK and rocked over 3000 folks on Baga Beach in Goa at the VH1 New year's eve party! Maneesh has shared the stage with Lee “Scratch” Perry, Thievery Corporation, François K, Smith & Mighty, Nickodemus, Kode 9, Badmarsh & Shri, State of Bengal, The Bug, Warrior Queen, Flying Lotus, DJ Hatcha, dj/rupture, Karsh Kale, Headhunter, Dub Gabriel, 2562, Adrian Sherwood (On-U sound), Bobby & Nihal, MIDIval PunditZ, Dum Dum Project, Cheb I Sabbah, MRK 1, J Boogie, Navdeep, Z-Trip, Solomonic Sound (Rob Paine), Badawi, Dub Gabriel, Dan the Automator & the legendary Jamaican producer, Scientist.
Kush Arora was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has had a lifetime of exposure and involvement in underground music. His current blend of dread bass, bhangradancehall, and dubstep,is only one of the many incarnations he has had as an artist. He started his visions as a metal/punk drummer also producing experimental, industrial, and twisted incarnations of dance music in his group Involution. He has worked with vocalists like Warrior Queen, Juakali, N4SA, Mc Zulu, and Sukh, putting out 5 CDs and two vinyl releases (including the recent "Dread Bass Chronciles" and "Dub Elements: Ocean" on color vinyl) and has remained an active live performer in the Bay Area and beyond. Kush and the Surya Dub crew have performed with the likes of Thievery Corporation, Flying Lotus, The Bug, Dr. Israel, Pinch, and won two awards for best club night in San Francisco. His riddims have been featured on BBC 1, Pitchfork and, URB, and charting on the CMJ charts.
Kid Kameleon has been mixing, mashing, and maximizing bass genres for over 10 years, ever since he got his start with DJ Spooky and the Soundlab collective in New York in the late 90s. A champion of outsider music styles and eclectic mixing techniques rooted in a core of hip-hop, jungle, and dub, these days the Kid’s sets take in ever-widening genres from breakcore to b-more, dubstep to dancehall, club, pop and even rock. He’s proudly performed in over two dozen countries, from Canada to Estonia, and has shared the stage with Kool Herc, U-Roy, Asian Dub Foundation, Alec Empire, Squarepusher, Dizzee Rascal, The Bug and Warrior Queen, Vex’d, Plastician, Flying Lotus, Kid 606, Maga Bo, Ghislain Poirier, Daddy Freddy, Drop The Lime, Mathhead, Flosstradamus. DJ C, WayneandWax, and Ripley, just to name a few. As a staff writer for XLR8R magazine, both his interviews and monthly column “Basic Needs” take readers to the furthest extremes electronic dance music, as do the numerous mixes he’s made for Shockout, Mashit, and dozens of other sites. He’s also a founder of San Francisco’s eclectic club night Surya Dub at Club Six, which won SF Weekly’s Best Club Night award in 2007 and the SF Bay Guardian’s “Best Ambassadors of Dread Bass” in 2008. As a blogger and scholar, his work ranges from measuring the social interactions of online networks to the implications of file-sharing on music business models, and he has worked with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (Eff.org) to assess the laws and policies that affect the connection between creative communities and technology. Ultimately, his eclectic sets have bar tenders dancing on their own bars, and put smiles on faces of all types of club goers.
Jimmy Love, founder of San Francisco's legendary Non Stop Bhangra nights and resident of Best Club night Surya Dub, has been rocking San Francisco with his unique blend of world and hip hop mixes for years. A true lover of funky beats, Jimmy Love's remixes have been featured everywhere from the BBC Asian network to NYC's finest The Rub's remix wall. > Having played along side some of the biggest world DJ's around, he has also opened for superstar acts like Anoushka Shankar, Michael Franti and Ziggy Marley with his Non Stop Bhangra Collective live sets. A rising star from San Francisco, his hope is to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western dance floors all over the world.
DJ Amar (Surya Dub / Electric Vardo / Shadow Dance / Non Stop Bhangra) Amar is amongst a handful of local DJs whose taste cuts a path through an abundance of musical selections and leads dancefloors into a hypnotic sway. In this instance the muse is a masala that brews sounds from the Middle East and Balkans with rhythms of the Asian underground and electric Brazilian vibes. Whether its breaks, bhangra, dubstep, drum & bass or downtempo the global nature of Amar's sets bridges a multi-culti span from the world to the Bay Area.
